A six-inch cube cast from the same mix as the slab, kept twenty-eight days and then crushed to see whether the slab would hold. This one held, and the crack pattern across the face is the record of the test.
The date and the mix are pencilled on one face in a hand nobody has identified. It came off a shelf in the Public Works store when that store was cleared.
