Hand press, Albion pattern

1966.8.1 1867 Cast iron, steel, brass 1,900 mm tall

An Albion, cast in London and shipped out in pieces. One pull of the bar prints one sheet, so everything printed on it was printed one sheet at a time: handbills, shipping notices, funeral programmes.

It worked on Harbour Street from 1867 until the shop closed. The platen still takes ink and we run it twice a year, which is the only reason it is out on the floor rather than in the store.
