Split along the grain with a froe, not sawn, which is why the face sheds water and a sawn shingle does not. The nail holes are square: the nails were cut, so this went up before the wire nail reached the island.
Taken down during a re-roofing in 1951 and given to us with eleven others. The other eleven are in the same box.
